Lady Blues beat Emporia St. 73-58
The Washburn women’s basketball team made its free throws when they counted Monday night.
The Lady Blues sank 23 of 28 free throws in the second half to pull away for a 73-58 victory over MIAA rival Emporia State.
Corkey Stiger scored a game-high 31 points to lead Washburn into the Elite Eight with a victory in the South Central Regional final in Canyon, Texas.
The Lady Blues held a 30-22 lead after a competitive first half. They tried to pull away early in the second, pushing their lead into double figures, but Emporia State made a charge.
Emporia State used a 10-0 run to climb within 39-34 with 10:55 remaining.
Michelle Stueve scored seven of her 18 second-half points during the run.
However, Stiger made a jumper and a 3-pointer to push the Lady Blues’ lead back to double digits.
Washburn sank 20 of 24 foul shots in the final 9:03 to secure the win.
Stueve finished with a double-double for Emporia State.
She had a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Emporia State finished the season with a 23-8 record.
Washburn (26-6) advances to the Elite Eight in Kearney, Neb. The Lady Blues will face the North Central champion at 8:30 p.m. March 26.
The Final Four will be March 27, and the championship game is set for March 29.
