ROUNDUP: Eight-run third propels Gremlins
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Sacred Heart softball team exploded for eight runs in the third inning Monday to beat Crest Ridge 12-0 near Centerview.
The Gremlins had 14 hits with six players having at least two each.
Debbie Lewis had three hits including two doubles. Laura Honn singled three times.
Kelsey Baldwin and Rachel Fisher doubled and singled. Laura McMullin and Emily Staus hit two singles each.
Honn was the winning pitcher. She threw five shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks and striking out five.
The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.
Sacred Heart (8-1) will conclude its season at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Sweet Springs at Centennial Park.
Smithton 15, Lakeland 0
The Smithton softball team took advantage of 15 walks issued by Lakeland pitching on Monday at Smithton.
The Tigers had only six hits with Alysha Case accounting for half of them. She went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
Sedel Marino doubled, drove home two runs and scored three. Alysa Cairer tripled and had one RBI.
Jessica Greer singled and had two RBIs. Jillian Burrows drew four walks and scored three runs for Smithton, which improved to 13-2.
La Monte 7, Jamestown 0
Laura Close struck out nine and scattered three hits and three walks Monday, as the La Monte softball team won on senior night.
Only two Jamestown runners reached third base, and one of them was picked off.
Close, a senior, struggled at the start of the sixth inning. Her team committed an error behind her, and back-to-back singles loaded the bases.
However, Chante Holcombe picked the runner off third, and Close struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.
Holcombe, a senior, went 2-for-3 with a triple and an inside-the-park home run.
Briana Davis hit a three-run triple in the sixth.
