Seventeen from Democrat’s coverage area honored
For the first time in two years, the Smith-Cotton girls basketball team has a representative on the all-Central District squad.
Cristian Sharp was named to the Class 5 team selected by the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Sharp is the first Lady Tiger to receive the honors since Maggie Johnson made the team in 2006.
The 5-foot-6 sophomore averaged 11 points per game this season for Smith-Cotton.
Sharp tops the list of 17 girls from The Democrat’s coverage area named to the all-district teams.
Class 3
Cole Camp’s Erin Rice and Versailles’ Julie Teeple represent the area on the Class 3 first team.
Rice, a 6-2 junior, averaged 15.1 points and 2.8 steals this season for the Bluebirds while Teeple, a 5-11 senior, posted averages of 20.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.4 steals for the Tigers. Versailles’ Raven and Simone Woods were named to the second team.
Class 2
Five girls from the area were selected to the Class 2 first team, including a pair of Smithton players.
Alina Voronenko and Heather Letourneau represent the Tigers on the first team. Voronenko, a 6-2 senior, averaged 23.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game while making 4.6 steals and delivering an average of 3.5 assists. Letourneau, a 5-8 senior, averaged 16.3 points, 5.2 steals and 3.1 assists for Smithton.
Sacred Heart’s Laura McMullin, a 6-foot junior, made the squad. She averaged 17.4 points and 13.4 rebounds per contest this season for the Gremlins.
Tipton’s Rachel Backes, a 5-1 senior, posted 15.9-point, 4.1-steal, 3.3-rebound and 3.2-assist-per-game averages to make the first team.
Stover’s Candace Garr was the fifth girl from the area to make the first team. The 5-10 junior averaged 17.5 points and 9.4 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lincoln’s Trisha Cook, Northwest’s Meredith Norfleet and Tipton’s Chelsey Hainen were selected to the second team.
Class 1
Otterville’s Marci Simmons and Pilot Grove’s Kayla Thomas made the Class 1 first team.
Simmons paced the Eagles with 27.3 points, 5.4 steals, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
Thomas, a 6-foot senior, averaged a double-double with 13.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per contest for the Tigers. She had three steals per game.
The Bunceton duo of Courtney Held and Hillary Kahle were named to the second team.
