Grems beat New Franklin with walk-off balk

The Sedalia Democrat

Tuesday’s baseball game between Sacred Heart and New Franklin ended in a fitting fashion.

The game that featured walks, hit-batsmen and multiple errors ended on a balk, giving Sacred Heart a 14-13 win at Liberty Park Stadium.

Sacred Heart (6-6) built an 8-3 lead through four innings, but that disappeared in a hurry.

New Franklin scored eight in the fifth to take an 11-8 lead. The Gremlins cut the lead to one run with two in the bottom of the fifth, but New Franklin scored two more in the sixth to restore its three-run advantage.

After scoring a run in the sixth, the Gremlins mounted a rally in the seventh.

Nicolai Cox smacked a leadoff double. Jacob Melick drew a walk. Jason Lamb hit a one-out single that went between the legs of the New Franklin outfielder. Cox and Melick scored on the error to tie the game.

New Franklin issued intentional walks to Alex Geml and Sam Liston. After recording the second out, the pitcher balked home Geml for the winning run.

Lamb was the winning pitcher despite throwing 2 1/3 shaky innings. He gave up three runs on two hits while striking out four. However, he walked three batters and hit four others.

Wes Register led the Gremlins’ offense with three hits including a triple. Geml went 2-for-3 and drew two walks.

Nate Bailey and Brice Stephens had two hits each. Lamb went 2-for-5 including a two-run, first inning homer.

“We didn’t pitch well, and we compounded the problem with walks and hit batters,” Sacred Heart coach Steve Goodwin said. “On the positive side, we won our third in a row, and anytime you’re down two runs in the last inning and you win, that always feels good.”
