ROUNDUP: Baseball Tigers capture district opener
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Smith-Cotton shot out to a quick start Monday en route to a 7-3 victory over Camdenton in the first round of the Class 4, District 10, baseball tournament in Jefferson City.
Adam Archibeque tripled on the first pitch, and Alex Lang doubled on the next pitch as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead. They never trailed.
The Tigers added another run in the first, one in the second and four in the fifth to finish off Camdenton. Camdenton tied the score at 3 in the top of the fifth.
Bryce Johnson dominated on the pitcher’s mound. He gave up three runs on three hits — only one to the outfield — and one walk, and he struck out 12 including the final three of the game. Cody Moore took the loss.
Dustin Broaddus led the Tigers’ 11-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Jared Hagedorn and Dylan Mays had two hits each.
The Tigers (8-15) will take on top-seeded Hickman in a semifinal at 4:30 p.m. today in Jefferson City.
Concordia District
Three of the four first-round games in the Class 1, District 15, baseball tournament ended on the mercy rule.
Top-seeded Santa Fe routed No. 8 Sweet Springs 20-0 in five innings Monday at Concordia.
No. 2 Pilot Grove beat No. 7 Slater 13-3 in five innings, and No. 3 Wentworth beat No. 6 Northwest 18-3 in five innings.
No. 5 Bunceton beat No. 4 Concordia 8-4 in the other first-round game.
Santa Fe will meet Bunceton in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. today. Pilot Grove will face Wentworth at 6:30 p.m. The championship game is set for 6 p.m. Thursday.
