Tipton's Mortenson adds to medal count

Six girls from The Democrat’s coverage area won all-state medals Saturday at the Classes 1 and 2 state track and field tournaments in Jefferson City.

The top eight finishers in each event won medals.

Tipton senior Lori Mortenson won the sixth and seventh all-state medals of her career. She placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.58 seconds. Precious Selmon, of Crystal City, won in 12.43.

Mortenson placed eighth in the 200 in 25.99. Londyn Backfisch, of Kelly, won in 25.41.

Carrie Binder,  Sarah Tyler, Kyra Williams and Christina Jones, all of Knob Noster, placed fourth in the 800 relay in 1:47.27. A team from Blair Oaks won in 1:46.07.

Brianna Blacklock, Tyler,  Williams and Jones, all of Knob Noster, placed fourth in the 400 relay in 51.38. A team from St. Louis Metro won in 50.45.
Knob Noster’s Jones placed eighth in the 100 in 13.00.

Other results involving local athletes:

•Hollie Heaper, of Sweet Springs, placed 12th in the shot put (30 feet, 8.50 inches). Candice Talbot, of Jasper, won with 37-9.25.

•Abish Curtis, Tori Kopp, Mandy Latty and Tina Guier, all of Concordia, placed 12th in the 3200 relay in 10:58.03. A team from Rock  Port won in 10:06.79.
