Roundup: Leeton squeaks past Grems

Top-seeded Leeton survived a 10-inning marathon Wednesday against Sacred Heart.
The Bulldogs topped the Gremlins 7-6 with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th of the Class 1, District 14, semifinals in Leeton.
“We had our chances and we played really well,” Sacred Heart coach Steve Goodwin said. “We’ve come a long way since the start of the season.”
Jason Lamb, Alex Geml and Jacob Melick combined to pitch the 10 solid innings for the Gremlins (7-7). Lamb threw four innings and struck out seven. Geml followed with three innings of work and six strikeouts while Melick threw three solid innings and struck out a pair.
Leeton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but Sacred Heart tied the game at 1 in the top of the fourth. The Bulldogs scored twice in the home half, but the Gremlins answered with three in the top of the fifth for a 4-3 advantage.
Leeton retook the lead with three runs in the fifth and Sacred Heart tied it at 6 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
Jacob Harlan paced the Gremlins’ offense, going 3-for-5 at the plate and reaching base four times.
Zack Dady threw nine innings for the Bulldogs and struck out 15 while allowing six runs.
The Bulldogs will face Lakeland at 4:30 p.m. today in the district championship.
