Severe weather forced an early end to semifinal play in the Class 2, District 10, girls soccer tournament on Tuesday night.
The game between the Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers and the Rock Bridge Bruins was halted with 26:09 remaining in the first half as a thunderstorm with lightning moved in from the southwest. The score was tied at 0.
Neither team had many good scoring opportunities in the opening 12 minutes.
The Smith-Cotton defense, anchored by Lindsay Cornell, Alicia Dunkin, Halee Ruckman and Amanda Azan, kept Rock Bridge from mounting a solid charge at the goal.
Smith-Cotton’s Tiffany Wehmeyer worked her way into position to score just two minutes before the field was cleared, but her shot was stopped by the Rock Bridge goalkeeper.
That would be the last significant play before a blast of lightning brought the evening to a close.
The two teams will pick up the game at the 26:09 mark at 6 p.m. today to determine an opponent for the Jefferson City Lady Jays in the championship game on Thursday night.
Jefferson City defeated Helias 2-1 on penalty kicks in the first semifinal.
After Helias scored a second-half goal to tie the game at 1, the teams battled through two overtimes and six penalty kicks before the final shot by Helias hit the crossbar and the Lady Jays secured the win.
