Tigers enjoy strong turnaround season
Smith-Cotton softball coach Jason Tischer was recognized by his peers this week for more than doubling his team’s win total from last season.
Tischer was awarded West Central Conference Coach of the Year award after the team improved from 4-13 to 9-9 this season.
“I thank everyone who has supported the program through some difficult years and a number of transitions,” Tischer said. “Clyde Ditto, my assistant coach, certainly deserves the lion’s share of accolades for the amazing job he’s done.
“Together, we have learned how to deal with stress, loss and success. ... (Along with my wife), the parents’ support has also made our efforts rewarding as well. They are simply incredible.”
S-C earned six all-conference selections.
Hayley Shelley, Smith-Cotton’s ace of the pitching staff, catcher Jessica Hardy and infielders Katie Hardy and Tiffany Wehmeyer were selected first-team all-conference.
Infielders Kelsey Griffin and Kelsey Kimbrough were named second-team all-conference.
“We finished 9-9, a .500 season, but these girls shed a losing mentality and gained a self confidence that will be a force next year,” Tischer said. “With no seniors on our roster, we will return all letter winners to the field in 2010.”
