No Tipton-Thayer rematch in semis

Harrisonville in same position as S-C was last season

The Sedalia Democrat

Tipton’s surprisingly lopsided victory over University Academy on Monday night wasn’t the only surprise in the Class 1 football sectional playoffs.

The top-ranked Orrick Bearcats’ quest for a third straight Class 1 championship ended with 51-13 loss to Penney on their home field. The loss snapped their win streak at 40 games.

Penney (11-0), the second-ranked team in the state, will face the winner of the North Platte-Mid-Buchanan game in the quarterfinals.

All quarterfinal games in Classes 1-4 are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

North Platte and Mid-Buchanan played Tuesday night because lightning forced the postponement of the game Monday.

A rematch between the fourth-ranked Thayer Bobcats and fifth-ranked Tipton won’t happen this season.

The two teams met in the semifinals in each of the past two years with Thayer winning.

Unranked Miller (10-2) beat Thayer 35-34 in double overtime.

Miller will host No. 3 Valle Catholic (12-0) in  the quarterfinals.

The 10th-ranked Adrian Blackhawks (10-2) won a wild one, beating No. 8 Greenfield 28-25 in overtime.

The Blackhawks tied the score at 22 on a 4-yard run by quarterback Trevor Gregg with 2 seconds left in regulation, according to The Joplin Globe.

Greenfield kicked a field goal to take a 25-22 lead in overtime, but Adrian scored on a 20-yard pass from Gregg to Skyler Kariker to win the game.

The Blackhawks will host Tipton in the quarterfinals.

No. 7 Wellington-Napoleon (11-1) will host No. 6 Marceline (12-0) in the other Class 1 quarterfinal.

Wellington-Napoleon knocked off Concordia 35-14, and Marceline beat Knox County 55-28.

Class 4

The Harrisonville Wildcats are in the same spot Smith-Cotton was last season in the Class 4 playoffs.

They will travel to Kearney for a quarterfinal round matchup.

Last year, Kearney beat S-C 36-7.

Harrisonville advanced to the quarterfinals with a 14-12 win over Grain Valley.

The Helias Crusaders beat Hannibal 48-31 to reach the quarterfinals where they will travel to Normandy.

Sikeston, Ladue Horton Watkins, Bolivar and Webb City round out the Elite Eight.

Class 2

Pierce City’s playoff run ended Monday night with Lamar winning 34-18.

Hogan Prep eliminated Carrollton from the playoffs  with a 33-30 victory in Independence.

Hogan Prep will travel to Maryville in the quarterfinals. Maryville beat Lawson 15-7.

Lamar will play at Fair Grove. Fair Grove beat Mountain View-Liberty 33-23.

Caruthersville, Brentwood, Centralia and Clark County made the quarterfinals on the top half of the bracket.

Centralia ended the season for the Tri-County Conference’s Blair Oaks with a 56-8 victory.

Class 3

O’Hara, of the West Central Conference, moved into the Class 3 quarterfinals  with a 21-16 win over Savannah.

The Celtics will visit Pleasant Hill in the quarterfinals.

Pleasant Hill beat Richmond 21-20 in a sectional playoff.

Mexico beat Fulton 14-13 in an all-North Central Missouri Conference sectional playoff game.

Mexico (6-6) will travel to Bowling Green in the quarterfinals.

New Madrid County Central, Priory, Logan-Rogersville and Cassville complete the Class 3 Elite Eight.
