Cardinals' opponent has won nine state championships
The Tipton Cardinals want it. Their opponent in the Class 1 semifinals has a tradition of getting it.
The Cardinals will host Valle Catholic, of Ste. Genevieve, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for the right to go to the state championship game.
The Cardinals (13-0) have an impressive history in the postseason. They have made the playoffs 10 times, compiled a 14-11 postseason record and have finished third in the state four times including in each of the past two years.
Sound impressive? Look what the Warriors have accomplished.
Valle (13-0) has reached the playoffs 16 times, has a 43-6 record in the postseason and has reached the state title game 10 times, winning the championship nine times.
Only Jennings has won more state football championships than Valle. Jennings has 10 state titles.
The Warriors won five straight state titles from 1988-1992 and reached the quarterfinals last season before losing 30-0 to Thayer.
The Cardinals have dominated this decade, while Valle’s heydays were in the 1980s and 1990s.
Penney (12-0) will host Wellington-Napoleon (12-1) in the other semifinal Saturday in Hamilton. All semifinals have 1:30 p.m. kickoff times.
Class 4
Harrisonville’s playoff run ended Saturday in Kearney.
Kearney routed the Wildcats 41-0.
Jefferson City’s Helias advanced to the semifinals with a 21-13 win over Normandy.
Helias (13-0) will host Sikeston (13-0) on Saturday in the semifinals.
Kearney (11-2) will travel to Webb City (13-0) in the other semifinal.
Class 2
Lamar is the Cinderella story of this year’s state football playoffs.
Lamar entered the playoffs with a 4-6 record and advanced to the state semifinals with a 42-14 victory over previously unbeaten Fair Grove.
The Tigers stretched their win streak to six games after a 1-6 start, facing mostly Class 3 and 4 competition in the Big Eight Conference. One of those teams — Cassville — is in the Class 3 final four.
Lamar (7-6) will host Maryville (12-1) in the semifinals Saturday.
Centralia (13-0) will host Brentwood (11-1) in the other semifinal.
Class 3
Mexico (6-7) was in the running for this year’s Cinderella story but lost 34-7 to Bowling Green on Saturday in the Class 3 quarterfinals.
Bowling Green (13-0) will meet Priory (8-5) in the semifinals Saturday in St. Louis.
West Central Conference runner-up O’Hara advanced to the semifinals with a 50-49 win over Pleasant Hill.
O’Hara (12-1) will travel to Cassville (12-1) in the other semifinal.
