S-C holds KC Center to one hit in two games

Wes Register was perfect at the plate and solid on the pitcher’s mound Tuesday in the first round of the Kaysinger Conference baseball tournament at Centennial Park.

Third-seeded Sacred Heart beat Smithton 9-3 to advance to today’s semifinal round.

Register went 3-for-3 including a double with one walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.

On the mound, he picked up the win, allowing two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings.

Jonathan Branson took the loss. He gave up nine runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

Jacob Harlan gave the Gremlins a lift on offense. He went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Gremlins (4-3) never trailed, grabbing a 1-0 first-inning lead and then scoring two in the second for a 3-1 advantage, a lead they never relinquished.

Sacred Heart will meet Cole Camp in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. today. Top-seeded Lincoln will face No. 4 Green Ridge in the other semifinal at 4 p.m. today. Both games are scheduled to be played in Lincoln.

Green Ridge beat Stover 9-5 Tuesday night.

Cole Camp 8, Northwest 2

Second-seeded Cole Camp scored two runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth Tuesday to win a first-round game in the Kaysinger Conference baseball tournament at Cole Camp.

The Bluebirds went ahead 1-0 after one inning, but Northwest scored one run each in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead.

Cole Camp knotted the score  at 2 in the fourth before going ahead to stay in the fifth.

Reliever Ron Herdman picked up the win, allowing no runs on one hit with seven strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

Sean Killion took the loss.

Tyler Rusk led Cole Camp, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Teammate Andrew Yeager went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Smith-Cotton 16, Center 1

Smith-Cotton pitching dominated Kansas City  Center on Tuesday night in a baseball doubleheader at Liberty Park Stadium.

The Tigers held Center to one hit over 10 innings.

Travis Tindell and Jared Hagedorn combined for a no-hitter in the nightcap. Tindell earned the win, allowing one unearned run with five strikeouts and five walks in four innings.

Spencer White  went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Tigers. Dominique Smith had only one hit, but he drove home three.

Alex Lang and Dylan Mays added two hits each.

Drew Hutinger tossed a one-hitter in the opener. He struck out nine and walked one in five innings.

Jared Hagedorn and Lang each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to pace S-C.

Crest Ridge 2, Concordia 0

Crest Ridge’s Ben Owens won a pitcher’s duel with Concordia’s Carter Brown on Tuesday night in the I-70 Conference baseball tournament in Concordia.

Owens gave up three hits while striking out 14 and walking two in seven innings.

Brown allowed two unearned runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

Cale Brunkhorst went 2-for-3 with a double to lead Concordia.

Owens went 2-for-3 with two doubles for Crest Ridge.

Crest Ridge will meet top-seeded Santa Fe in the semifinals at 5 p.m. today.

Concordia falls to the consolation game, which is set for 3 p.m. Thursday.

Both games will be played at the Concordia Sports Complex.

GIRLS SOCCER

Smith-Cotton 1, Jefferson City 0

The Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers soccer team played a strong second half Tuesday night to win a matchup against Jefferson City.

Jessica Greer scored about 15 minutes into the second half for the game-winning goal at Susie Ditzfeld Field. Goalkeeper Cristian Sharp earned the shutout.

“They took it to us in the first half,” S-C coach  Shawn Cairer said.

“We came out flat and lazy. In the second half, we came out strong and played well. We had a lot of opportunities.”

The Lady Tigers (11-3-1) will host Clinton at 5 p.m. Thursday.

BOYS TENNIS

Smith-Cotton 7, Clinton 2

The Smith-Cotton boys tennis team improved to 4-1 in West Central Conference play Tuesday at Clinton.

The Tigers (5-3) won five of six singles matches.

Chris Shepard beat Paul Henry 8-6, Matt Roehrs beat Alex Jones 8-3, Adam Tilley beat James Glasscock 8-1, Ryan Bell beat Nathan Suthoff 9-7 and Keaton Schnell beat Andy Skaggs 9-7.

Casey Wetzel beat Chet Krouse 8-4 for Clinton’s only singles victory.

In doubles, Shepard-Roehrs beat Henry-Glasscock 8-1, and Tilley-Bell beat Jones-Skaggs 8-3.

Suthoff-Wetzel beat Schnell-Krouse 8-6 for Clinton’s other win.

TRACK AND FIELD

CCAA meet

The Pilot Grove girls jumped to a second-place finish Tuesday in the Cooper County Activities Association track and field meet at Central Methodist University in Fayette.

Higbee won with 140 points. Pilot Grove accumulated 105, Prairie Home had 104 and Jamestown 101.

Bunceton was fifth with 35, Malta Bend sixth with 29 and Otterville seventh with three.

Pilot Grove won three jumping events.

Becca Felten won the high jump (4 feet, 2 inches). Amelia Truex won the long jump (14-4 1/2), and Sarah Twenter won the triple jump (27-1).

Higbee dominated the boys meet, beating second-place Jamestown 169-102.

Otterville was third with 78, Malta Bend fourth with 76, Bunceton fifth with 65, Prairie Home sixth with 12 and Pilot Grove seventh with nine.

Two Bunceton athletes won events.

Martin Berwanger won the 3200-meter run in 11 minutes, 45.90 seconds and the 1600 in 5:27.88.

Jeremy Tuttle won the pole vault (8-6).

BOYS GOLF

Capital City tournament

The Smith-Cotton Tigers placed 12th Monday in the Capital City boys golf tournament at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield.

The Tigers finished with a 358.

Rockhurst won with 309. Rock Bridge was second with 320, and Warrensburg was third with 325.

Jacob Burkholder led the Tigers with a 12-over 84. Nick Tuggle shot 89, Brendan Hurley 90, John Carroll 95 and Nick Carroll 103.
