Smithton junior Benjamin Calvert keeps moving up the ranks among Missouri’s Class 1 distance runners.
He earned two personal-best finishes this weekend in the state track and field meet in Jefferson City.
After placing sixth in the 1600-meter run Friday, he took second in the 3200 Saturday in 10 minutes, 28.48 seconds. While the time wasn’t his best in the event — he ran 10:23.50 last year at state — he felt good about his performance.
“I felt I did the best I could,” Calvert said. “I ran my hardest. I think I did OK.”
He recorded a personal-best time of 4:46.77 in the 1600 Friday after finishing 10th in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. His previous personal-best time of 4:50.27 was set last year at state.
In the 3200, he placed sixth as a freshman and third as a sophomore.
“I hope I can get a championship one day, hopefully next year in the 2-mile,” Calvert said.
Blake Goodin, of Princeton, won the 3200 in 10:15.52.
Tanner Edwards, of Tipton, and the 800 relay team from Knob Noster brought home second-place medals in the Class 2 meet.
Edwards was the runner-up in the 400 in 49.14 seconds. Fred Taylor, of Maplewood, won in 49.08.
