Sacred Heart freshman Lakin Kehde scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season Saturday at the Barstow boys soccer tournament in Kansas City.
However, the seventh goal may have been his most important one so far.
The Gremlins beat Bishop LeBlond 3-1 in the fifth-place match.
Bishop LeBlond scored in the 49th minute to cut the Gremlins’ lead to 2-1.
Kehde scored three minutes later for an important insurance goal.
“That was a big goal,” Sacred Heart coach Carlos McField said.
“At halftime, I told them we’re up 2-0. The next goal is the most important. If LeBlond scores, they’re right back in it. If we score, we can put it out of reach. I’m proud of the boys for not panicking and sticking to the game plan.”
Kehde opened the scoring in the third minute, and Chester Yap’s first goal of the season pushed the Gremlins’ lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute.
Goalkeeper Jacob Harlan saved 11 of the 12 shots he faced to earn the win.
The Gremlins (2-1) will open their home schedule at 6 p.m. Tuesday against first-year program Oak Grove at Clover Dell Park.
