Boys soccer team in sectionals for first time since 2003
After a five-year drought, the Sacred Heart Gremlin soccer team is back in the Class 1 state playoffs.
The Gremlins controlled the tempo and the scoreboard as they defeated St. Paul Lutheran 2-0 Friday night at Clover Dell Park in the Class 1, District 7 championship.
Lakin Kehde scored the Gremlins’ first goal and assisted Oscar Gonzalez early in the second half to give Sacred Heart all it needed to earn the win.
“We controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish,” Sacred Heart coach Carlos McField said. “We really played our style of soccer and that was one thing we stressed from the beginning — to play our game.”
Sacred Heart will face St. Pius X in a sectional match at 6 p.m. Thursday at Excelsior Springs High School.
A win would give the Gremlins their first final four appearance in school history.
The last time the Gremlins won the district was in 2003 after a quadruple overtime victory; they lost to College Heights in overtime in the sectional game.
McField hopes this time will be different.
“We know St. Pius is going to be tough,” he said. “They have two good goal scorers. We will have to work hard and see what happens.”
Kehde’s goal came in the 30th minute. Just minutes into the second half, he sparked the second goal. The sophomore forward broke free down the sidelines and found Gonzalez, who buried his shot.
