District showdown

Top two seeds reach title match

The Sacred Heart Gremlins earned their spot in the Class 1, District 12 volleyball tournament title match with a sweep of Sweet Springs.

The top-seeded Gremlins beat No. 4 Sweet Springs 25-20, 25-21 Monday night at Green Ridge High School.

The Gremlins (16-11-3) will meet second-seeded Green Ridge in the championship match at 7 p.m. today.

Sacred Heart coach David Fall commended the all-around play of Sierra Fredrick and the defense of Johannah Hohne and Rachel Fritz.

Fredrick had five kills, two kill-blocks, 10 digs, six points and two serving aces.

Hohne shared team-high honors with Fredrick with 10 digs. Fritz had eight digs.

Kelli Lamb paced the Gremlins with 10 kills and eight assists.

Rachel Fischer led Sacred Heart with eight points, and she had seven assists.

Green Ridge 2, Northwest 1

Green Ridge overcame a one-game deficit Monday to beat Northwest 19-25, 26-24, 25-22 in the semifinals.

“Northwest played great. They played awesome defense and kept on hitting,”  Green Ridge coach Lori Larimore said. “Both teams brought their ‘A’ game.”

Laurel Larimore paced Green Ridge with 11 kills. Torey Williams had 27 digs. Jordyn Smith had five kill-blocks, and Ragin Dillon led the Lady Tigers with 18 assists.

Northwest won its first-round match against La Monte 25-10, 25-10. Sweet Springs beat Smithton in the other first-round match

Class 2, District 13

The favored teams all won Monday night in the first round of the Class 2, District 13 volleyball tournament at Cole Camp.

No. 4 Tipton beat No. 5 Russellville 25-17, 25-8. No. 2 California beat No. 7 Eugene 25-16, 26-24.

No. 3 Cole Camp beat No. 6 Warsaw 25-21, 24-26, 25-22.

Top-seeded Stover will meet Tipton in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. today. California and Cole Camp will meet at 7 p.m. The championship match is set for 8:30 p.m.

Knob Noster 2, Lexington 0

The fourth-seeded Knob Noster Panthers beat Lexington 25-22, 25-15 Monday night in the first round of the Class 2, District 14 volleyball tournament in Higginsville.

Kyra Williams paced Knob Noster with seven kills and 15 digs.

Becky MaGee and Candi Mueller shared team-high honors with two kill-blocks apiece.
Kelly Malcolm led Knob Noster with 20 assists.

Knob Noster will meet top-seeded St. Mary’s in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
