PREP ROUNDUP: Late push fails Grems

Platte County sent the Sacred Heart Gremlins into the consolation bracket of the Barstow boys soccer tournament on Tuesday in Kansas City.
Platte County, which won the first-round match 5-1, led 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 before play was stopped because of lightning near the 50-minute mark.
With 26 minutes left in the match, Lakin Kehde scored to slice Platte County’s lead in half.
Platte County scored its third goal about seven minutes later and added a pair of insurance goals in the closing minutes.
“We pushed everyone forward, trying to score,” Sacred Heart coach Carlos McField said, “and they capitalized on” Sacred Heart’s short-handed backfield.
The Gremlins will meet the loser of the Cameron-Maryville match at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Clinton 2, Cole Camp 0
Clinton’s Shawn Rhodes scored on a penalty kick early in the first half Tuesday of a boys soccer match at Clinton.
Dillon Dehn added an insurance goal midway through the second half to finish off Cole Camp.
Cole Camp won the junior varsity match 3-1.
Southern Boone 3, Lincoln 2
Southern Boone’s first-half goal held up Tuesday in a boys soccer match at Lincoln. Southern Boone led 1-0 halftime, and both teams scored twice in the second half.
Cristian Arechiga and Bryan Eichler scored goals for Lincoln. Arechiga had an assist.
Marshall 8, Smithton 0
The Marshall Owls shot out to a 5-0 lead by halftime and rolled to an easy victory Tuesday at Marshall.
“They pretty much controlled the whole game,” Smithton coach Dave Holiway said. “We had some decent runs in the last 15 to 20 minutes.”
The Tigers (0-1) will host St. Paul Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
VOLLEYBALL
Green Ridge def. Windsor 25-19, 20-25, 25-13
Green Ridge’s stats weren’t gaudy, but they won the most important statistic — the final score — beating Windsor in both teams’ season opener.
McKenna Dixon paced Green Ridge with six kills. Laurel Larimore added five.
Ashley Hampton had 10 assists, and Megan Askey had nine service points.
Holden def. Cole Camp 25-14, 25-19
The Cole Camp Bluebirds began the season as the eighth-ranked team in Class 2, according to the Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association. The Holden Lady Eagles must not have been impressed.
Jenna Cordes paced the Bluebirds with five kills and seven digs. Ashley Meyer had a team-high 12 assists, five service points and five digs.
Caitlyn Metzner added five digs, and Becca Schacht had four kills.
Holden won the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-22, and the freshman match 25-20, 25-20.
Crest Ridge def. Smithton
25-10, 25-11
With 12 freshmen on their roster, the Smithton Tigers learned a lot about varsity volleyball Tuesday night at Smithton.
“They starting killing the ball, and (we) hadn’t seen that before,” coach Lisa Tatum said.
Smithton lost the junior varsity match 25-14, 25-18.
Appleton City def. Lincoln 25-20, 12-25, 28-26
Alex Cooke had a team-high eight kills, and Shyanne Swearngin had 16 assists for Lincoln in its season-opening loss at Appleton City.
Audra Blackburn and Trisha Cook had 11 service points each Tuesday night for the Lady Cardinals’ volleyball team. Rachel Young had seven digs.
Lincoln won the JV match 25-23, 25-18.
SOFTBALL
Holden 15, Knob Noster 5
The Holden Lady Eagles kept the Knob Noster softball team winless Tuesday in a Missouri River Valley Conference East game at Holden.
The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Carrie Binder paced Knob Noster with two hits in three at-bats. She had two RBIs and scored two runs.
Victoria Jackson went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Brooke Jackson went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Brooke Jackson took the loss, giving up 15 runs with three strikeouts and four walks in five innings.
Knob Noster fell to 0-3.
GIRLS GOLF
Jefferson City 192, Smith-Cotton 194, Helias 215
Smith-Cotton’s Amanda Azan shot a match-best 4-over 39 Tuesday at Sedalia Country Club.
“Overall, I was pleased with the team score,” S-C coach B.J. Curry said. “It was an improvement from last week, but we still need to get better if we are going to compete in districts.”
Jenny Swafford had a 47 , Lauren Azan 53 and Laura Hancock 56 to round out the Lady Tigers’ team score.
